Passage: Hebrews 11:1
Service Type:

We're going to be looking at the song, Our God He is Alive. It was written by A.W. Dicus, a member of the Lord's church, a scientist, and a physicist. And, looking at verse 3, from the perspective of a scientist to pen, "Secure is life from mortal mind, God holds the germ within His hand." that's the fact, man can search, but cannot find how creation happened and how life continues.

No doubt, most are familiar with the song, Our God He is Alive. It is a wonderful song of faith in God.

By definition, faith is "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." - Hebrews 11:7

  • Hebrews 11:1
  • Hebrews 11:7
  • Hebrews 11:27

Interestingly, the song under consideration speaks of "a God, concealed from human sight."

Our faith is not a leap in the dark. It is based on substance and evidence.

I think that if we were honest, we would all make the request that the disciples did on one occasion when they asked the Lord, "increase our faith." - Luke17:5, Mark 9:24.

At best, we would all have to confess that our faith is somewhere between

  • weak and strong, Romans 4:20
  • little and great, Matthew 8:10, Luke 12:28
  • poor and rich, James 2:5
  • dead and alive, James 2:26

Ultimately, our faith is in a living God. A god who is dead is not worth believing in. Repeatedly, in the Scriptures, God is identified as the living God.

The expression occurs at least 31 times in Scriptures - 15 times in the Old Testament and 16 times in the New Testament.

Some of the key verses are:

  • Psalms 42:2
  • Matthew 16:16
  • Acts 14:15

There is a God He is alive, in Him, we live and we survive.

The song speaks of the fact that God IS alive and IS the great I AM!, Mark 12:26-27.

From this song, we will look at three verses, and three ideas from the song, God is alive in Creation, Salvation, and Revelation.

When it Comes to Creation - Our God Is Alive!

The first verse of the song affirms our faith in the work of God relative to creation. Notices the song speaks of the fact that "He tinted skies with heavenly hue and framed the worlds with His great might."

  • Jeremiah 32:17
  • Genesis 2:7
  • Psalms 103:14

Evolutionists would have us believe that relative to creation, our God is dead.

  • They would have us to believe that this world is the result of blind chance rather than a benevolent Creator.
  • They would speak of life springing from dead matter rather than from the living God.
  • They would speak of life resulting from random mutation rather than miraculous creation.

When it comes to creation, Our God He Is Alive!

  • Hebrews 11:3
  • Psalms 148:3-5
  • Romans 1:20
  • Psalms 19:1

Our God is alive in regards to creation.

When it comes to Revelation - Our God Is Alive!

The second verse of the song affirms our faith in the work of God relative to revelation. Please note, that it refers to "a long, long time ago." and the "God, whose voice the prophets heard."

  • Hebrews 1:1-2

Note too, that it refers to a "God that we should know, who speaks from His inspired Word."

  • 2 Timothy 3:15-17

Some would have us believe when it comes to the revelation that God is dead. Some would have us believe that the Bible is simply a collection of myths and fables. Some would have us believe that the prophets didn't really predict future events, but that they simply recorded events several centuries after they happened.

Some would have us to believe that the Bible is inspired, but only in the sense that Shakespeare or any other great pieces of literature are inspired.

Some would have us believe that the Bible contains the Word of God, but that every word is not inspired. And others would have us believe that the Word of God has been lost through years of copying and recopying the Scriptures.

When it comes to revelation, Our God He is alive.

  • 2 Peter 1:20-21

Scripture did not come about by the interpretation of man. They didn't imagine what to write, they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

  • 2 Samuel 23:2
  • 1 Peter 1:9-12

The Word of God reveals to us the things the angels, who were there at creation, did not know and wanted to know. It reveals things that the prophets didn't write for themselves, but they wrote it for us.

It is said, that the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.

  • Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God is alive, our God He is alive.

When it Comes to Salvation - Our God Is Alive!

The fourth verse of the song affirms our faith in the work of God relative to salvation. Note that,  "whose Son upon a tree a life was willing there to give."

God's Word affirms to us the love of God through His plan of salvation.

  • 1 John 4:9-10

Please note, that it speaks of Jesus' dying that "He from sin might set man free."

In instituting the memorial of His death, Jesus said, Matthew 26:28,

Note that it speaks of Jesus' dying that man "evermore with Him could live."

  • Romans 6;23

Some would argue that there is nothing higher than man. They would insist that man must determine what is right for himself.

Some would argue that sin is a myth. They would argue that the idea of sin was created by legalists to impost and control human freedom

Some would argue that this life is all that there is. They would argue that man doesn't live beyond the grave.

  • Matthew 26:28
  • Romans 6:23

We see, that Adam and Eve, did die, not immediately, but they did die a human death, and ultimately spiritual death.

  • Titus 3:4-6

Through the death of Christ on the cross, and the washing of regeneration in baptism, Jesus saves us. If we don't believe, that Jesus is the Son of God, we have nothing to hold onto.

  • John 8:24
  • Hebrews 11:6
  • John 3:16

What does it mean to believe in Jesus? Is it just a mental assertion that He is the Son of God? Is that all?

No, we have got to not only believe about Jesus, but it has to lead us to obedience. Faith, without works, is dead, James 2:26.

We must believe in the Son of God in a way that leads us to repentance and turning away from sin. We must be willing to confess His name before men and to obey Him in baptism.

That's what faith is. It is a living faith that moves us to action.

In this lesson, we have established that our God is alive in three areas, creation, revelation, and salvation.

Our God, He Is Alive!

May our faith in God be:

  • Strong and not Weak!
  • Rich and Not Poor!
  • Great and not small!
  • Alive and not dead!
