Service Type:

"For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it." — 1 Peter 3:10,11

Peter talks about how we can love life, and live a good life on this earth. And, how we can prepare ourselves for Heaven. What will a person do who if they truly love life and truly want what's best and want to go to Heaven? What will that person do?

In 1 Peter 3 there is advice on how to live a good life on this earth. Peter gives this advice to husbands and wives on how to conduct themselves in the relationship. Then, he goes on to give advice on how we should live and act toward each other. Here in these verse, Peter gives advice for how to live on this earth.

  • Psalm 34:12-16

How Do We Seek a Love for Life and Good Days?

Whoever wants to enjoy life, and see good days will do these things Peter gives us in this chapter.

1- Refrain His Tongue from Evil

Refrain - to make cease, to desist or restrain a thing or a person from something.

It is to exercise self control over the tongue so that it does no evil.

  • James 3:2-8

James says that the tongue can never be tamed, but can be bridled. It can be held in check. We all know of times when we've spoken and our tongues got us in trouble. Refrain means to make it stop, to restrain it. We can control what comes out of our mouth.

  • 1 Peter 2:1

There many forms of evil speaking. If we want to enjoy life and see good days we must keep evil language out of our mouth.

  • 1 Peter 3:10

We must refrain from speaking evil. God's word says that we cannot speak such things. Our language reveals what we are truly like.

  • Proverbs 31:7
  • Matthew 12:34

It's very important, the things that we say reveal what's in our heart. We must first guard our hearts. But, those things which come from our mouth is what is in our hearts. We should pray, "Lord, put a watch before the door of my lips" Psalm, 141:3.

  • Ephesians 4:29

It is impossible to enjoy life and see good days if we disobey God's law.

2- Speak No Deceit, or Guile

Deceit, guile, means to catch with a bait, a lure or snare. To speak deceitfully, or with craftiness.

  • 1 Peter 2:1

Guild is closely associated with flattery. It is spoken for self-interest. It's like using bait to get something you desire.

  • Proverbs 29:5
  • Proverbs 20:19

There is a difference between a compliment and flattery. Flattery will result in unhappiness in life. We'll be miserable because we'll have no friends. Don't be involved with hypocrisy, in flattery.

3-  Eschew Evil and Do Good

Eschew means to turn away from. Thayer's dictionary defines it as - to bend away from as you would in a narrow path to let another pass.

We must shun, avoid and turn away from evil.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:22

The only way to shun evil is to do good. To turn away from evil and is to only do that which is good.

  • Galatians 6:10

Be ready to take advantage of every opportunity to do good, to all men.

  • Matthew 5:34

Loving our enemies, and doing good to those who hate us, may be one of the toughest commandments that Jesus ever gave. It seems to go against what we think as men and women, to do good to those who hurt us.

Sometimes, we let opportunities to do good go past.

  • James 4:7

We need to take every opportunity to do good, to be active to do good.

4- Seek Peace and Pursue It

We live in a time of strife between men, women, nations. We need to seek peace with all.

Sin has caused us to be at enmity with God so that we have peace with Him. We need to put sin out of our lives, and seek peace with God. But, we need to teach the gospel to others so they too can have peace with God.

Pursue - is an attempt to attain.

Seek peace at all times. Restore peace when it is broken.

  • Philippians 4:7
  • Matthew 5:9

All of us seek happiness in life. God tells us how to achieve happiness,

"For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it." — 1 Peter 3:10,11

If we are going to live a good life, a godly life that is pleasing to God and make preparations for Heaven we should do these four things that the Apostle Peter has told us to do. If we do these things, then we will be righteous, happy and have a good life.

  • 1 Peter 3:12-17

In this world in which we life, we will suffer, 1 Timothy 3:12. Our life is not going to be easy. While we are to seek good days, that doesn't mean every day will be easy. But, with Christ and living a righteous life we have that hope of heaven, we have something better to look forward to.

We must respond to the Gospel. Jesus Christ died for our sins, he took our place the righteous for the unrighteous. That is the good news of the gospel We must believe that Jesus died for our sins, we must repent our sins and confess that faith. And, we must be baptized for the remission of our sins, rising to walk a new life in him.
