Because We Were Baptized

Because We Were Baptized
February 16, 2020
Passage: Romans 6
Service Type:

The scriptures plainly teaches that the repentant person who is baptized receives forgiveness of sins. So we understands that baptism is what brings us to for forgiveness.

  • Acts 2:38
  • Romans 6:4

There is a new life in Christ Jesus.

  • Galatians 3:27

We’re baptized into Christ where the new life is.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17

Baptism is essential to salvation. It separates us from the death to sin, and the new life in Christ Jesus. Baptism must have a significant relationship for the new Christian.

Because we were Baptized We Should Walk in Newness of Life

A new relationship with Christ begins with baptism.

  • Romans 6:6-11
  • Romans 6:3-4

We are baptized into death, and thus we are to walk in newness of life. Christians are to be servants of righteousness and walk in a new life.

Christians should ask themselves these questions.

  1. Is there Newness of Life?
  2. Has there been transformation of life?
  • Colossians 1:13-14
  • Ephesians 4:22-24

If you live the same life that you always lived before you were baptized. What does that say about whether you were truly baptized?

The church preaches long and loud on whether or not baptism is essential. But, as a church, do we sometimes forget to teach that after baptism we must walk a new life?

Because we were Baptized There Should be Unity in Christ

  • Galatians 3:27-28

When a penitent believes and is baptized he is added to Christ’s body.

  • Acts 2:47
  • Colossians 1:18

There are many members in the body, but only one body.

  • Romans 12:4-5

Each one of us who is baptized into Christ is a child of God. Collectively we are one body in Christ.

  • Ephesians 4:4

Thus, there should be unity in the body. Every time a division started to present itself, Paul addressed this.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:10

We must remember that we are baptized and endeavor to have unity in the body.

Because we were Baptized We Should Worship God

At Pentecost when those who believed and were baptized continued in worship of God.

  • Acts 2:42

They had come to Jerusalem on Pentecost to worship God. And, upon hearing that Jesus was the Christ they believed and were baptized and continued in their worship of God.

Worship is not acceptable by God from those who are not Christians.

  • Matthew 7:21

One who has not repented, and has been baptized into Christ, are not Christians. They are not born again.

  • John 3:3,5

So only those who are born of water and the spirit are in the kingdom. Therefore, no one who has not been born of water and spirit, have the right to call on the name of God.

Also, those who have not been baptized have no right to observe the supper of the Lord.

  • Luke 22:29-20

Only those who are born again, and deemed children of God have the right to partake in the Communion with the Lord.

  • Hebrews 10:25

Because we have been baptized we should not forsake worship.

Because we were Baptized We should have Regular Bible Study

We are to continue in teaching and studying God’s word.

  • Matthew 28:19-20

Teaching must continue on. It really begins there, once we are baptized and we walk int newness of life we should continue in learning from God’s word. The new birth is completed and we become new creatures in Christ.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17

A child is not born in sin, it is free from the stain of sin. It’s not until we come to an age when we know better than to do wrong. So when one is baptized they are restored to that relationship of a child with God.

  • 1 Peter 2:2

We are to long for the spiritual milk that feeds the soul. We have to have a desire to know the word of God.  There comes a time when you need to continue beyond the basic principles and grow beyond the beginning things and grow in knowledge of God.

  • Hebrews 5:12-14

It’s fitting for a babe in Christ to be fed milk. It is not fitting for a more mature Christian to continue to feed on milk. They must move on to the meat of the word.

  • Hebrews 6:1

At some point you have to leave behind, move beyond the basic principles, and move toward perfection in Christ.

The Hebrews writers explains why we have so many babies in the church. Without feeding more over time, the baby will eventually die. And so, if a Christian doesn’t continue to grow in word, they too will die spiritually.

  • Matthew 4:4

How much do we feed on the word of God? We cannot grow without it, and we must continue in Bible study.

Because we Were Baptized We Should Seek Those Things Which are Above

If you’ve been baptized you should seek heavenly things.

  • Colossians 3:1-3

You’ve been risen with Christ and are walking in newness of life. You need to seek the things which are above and set spiritual priorities.

Jesus loved the church, and gave himself for her.

  • Ephesians 5:25-27

Christ gave himself for the church,

  1. That he might sanctify it, and cleanse it by the washing of water by the word.
  2. That he may present it to himself a glorious church, without spot.

Baptism is the consummating act in conversion. Baptism is not in and of itself conversion. It is, however, the door in which we pass out of the kingdom of darkness of God's dear Son. Hence, we must pass through it. We should fix our choice and seal our vow to be holy possessed by Christ.

Our loyalty is affirmed when we sing the hymn:

Oh Happy Day vs. 2, lyrics by Phillip Doddridge
'Tis done - the great transaction's done;
I am my Lord's, and He is mine;
He drew me and I followed on,
Regoiced to own the call divine.

Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away!

Why is this true? Why is it true that we’ve committed ourselves to him? Because we’ve been baptized.

Have you been baptized? Have you been baptized into Christ? If so, then you may walk as a Christian, so as to receive at last the crown of life at the Father's right hand.

Those that are faithful on the day of judgement the Lord's going to say unto them, come ye blessed, enter into the joy of the Lord. There is a blessing awaiting  those in heaven who are faithful children of God.

Have you been baptized into Christ? If not, will you upon your sincere faith, your belief that Jesus is the son of God, be moved to repent earnestly of your sins, and upon the noble confession of the sweet name of Jesus Christ be baptized for the remission of your sins.

As one who has been baptized you must be faithful to the Lord until the end of your journey of life.  And, you will be at be received at last into the city which has foundation, whose Builder, and Maker is God.
