The Best is the Worst

Speaker:
Series:
Passage: Revelation 22
Service Type:

We're going to show the best things about heaven, then show the exact opposite is the worst things about hell.

  • Ecclesiastes 3:1-7

"And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment" - Hebrews 9:27

At some point we will all face death. There are only two possible destinations for eternity.

  • John 5:28-29

There are only two destinies possible, either heaven or hell. And, the way we live our life here determines the final destination.

Eternity in Light vs. Darkness

Heaven is a place of eternal light.

  • Revelation 21:23

In heaven there is no need of a sun or moon. There is light that emanates from the throne of God, light emanates from Christ.
Light is the symbol of holiness. God and Christ provide all the light that is needed. Jesus is the light of the world.

  • Revelation 22:5, no night there

Heaven will be a night-less city with one eternal day with God being the light.

The opposite it true of Hell, there is no light there.

Hell is a place of eternal darkness.

  • Matthew 25:30

The unprofitable servant faced this darkness. It's hard to fathom this outer darkness. A day -less existence, darkness is the symbol of evil and ungodliness. Darkness is punishment.

Eternity in hell is the blackness of darkness for ever.

  • Jude 13

Hell is a place with no light whatsoever.

Eternity of Water vs. Thirst

In heaven there is water, a place of clear water.

  • Revelation 22:1, a pure water of life.
  • Revelation 7:16-17, they shall never thirst anymore.

The living fountains of water and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

"They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” - Revelation 7:16-17

This water gives life giving powers, water which restores, refreshes and restores life. Water is used to illustrate the spiritual life. No spiritual thirst will be in Heaven. The source of this water is clearly revealed, it proceeds out of the throne of God and the Lamb.

  • Matthew 5:6,

The opposite of this is true in hell.

Have you ever been so thirsty you feel like you can't be quenched? The rich man had the kind of thirst that can't be quenched when he lifted up his eyes in torment.

  • Luke 16:24

Hell is a place of thirst physically and spiritually. At this point, he's not in hell, yet, he's in the place of torment, the place of the grave for the unrighteous but on the day of judgement he will be added to the lake of eternal fire.

Eternity of the Blessings of Tree of Life Vs. No Blessings

Heaven is a place where we find the Tree of Life.

  • Revelation 22:2

The Tree of Life is found on both sides of the river. This shows the abundant blessings.

  • Revelation 2:7

Sin entered into the world separating man from the Tree of Life. But, in Heaven we will be restored to this Tree of Life whose fruit gives life.

In Hell none of these blessings will be enjoyed.

  • 2 Thessalonians 1:9
  • James 1:17
  • Matthew 5:45

In Hell we would not be in the presence of the Lord, but in Hell would be only in the presence of the Devil. And, all good gifts come from God.

Eternity in the Presence of the Throne of God  Vs.  the Abode of the Devil

When we are in heaven we will be around the throne of God.

  • Revelation 22:3
  • Matthew 25:41

Heaven represents the majesty and power of God and Christ. Man is separated from them because of sin. But, when we reach heaven we will be in their presence once again.

In Hell, those who are there will be in the abode of the devil.

Hell was never prepared for man. It was prepared for the angels of the Devil, but men who are wicked will be cast into this place reserved for the Devil.

Eternity with No More Curse Vs. Cursed

In Heaven there is no more curse. But in Hell that is the place where the cursed are to go.

In the garden, those who sinned were cursed, and separated from God. The curse of death came into being. But in Heaven the curse is removed.

  • Revelation 22:3
  • Galatians 3:113
  • Zechariah 14:11

There is no curse in Heaven.

But, in Hell the Cursed are Sent to Everlasting File

  • Matthew 25:41

The penalty of disobedience. In Hell everyone is cursed.

Eternity of Rest Vs. No Rest

Heaven is a place of rest.

  • Revelation 14:13
  • Revelation 21:3,4

It is a place of rest. There is rest from labors that man did on earth.

  • Hebrews 4:9

We have rest in this earth as Christians, we are faithful that God will deliver on His promise. But, in Heaven we will have true rest. We will have rest from labors, and the battle against sin.

Rest does not mean inactivity. We will be active in Heaven. We lay up treasure in Heaven. But, it's not going to be painful but rather joyful, wonderful, singing praises to God, for eternity. There will be no unsettling experiences. Night will never fall on our joy there.

In Hell, though, there is no rest.

  • Revelation 14:11

They have no rest, day or night. Their torment doesn't end. It is eternal.

An Eternity of No Heat Vs. Torment

Another great thing about Heaven is there is no heat.

In Heaven the son shines all the time, but there is no heat. It is full of comfort and blessing.

In hell, though there is heat all of the time. It never ends.

  • Luke 16:24

He's tormented in the flame.

  • Revelation 14:10,11

The wrath of God is poured out on those in Hell, being tormented with fire and brimstone.

An Eternity of No Tears vs. Weeping

In Heaven there are no tears.

There is no crying, only joy. God wipes away all tears.

  • Revelation 21:4

There will be nothing in Heaven to cause tears, weeping.

  • Matthew 25:30

But, in Hell there is constant weeping and gnashing of teeth.

In Hell there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. I can't think of a greater punishment than knowing it will never end.

Eternity with Golden Streets Vs. Fiery Lake

In Heaven there is a golden street.

  • Revelation 21:31

He puts it into terms we can understand. He likens heaven to streets paved with pure gold. Gold being the most precious metal on the earth and this street is gold like a sheet of clear glass. It's like a mansions with beautiful rooms. On earth we would liken it to King Louis VIII's golden room in Versailles, yet Heaven, will be so much greater than that. Nothing man has ever seen can compare.

Hell is nothing but a Lake of Fire

  • Revelation 21:8

It is a fiery lake burning with fire and brimstone. Brimstone is sulfur, it smells bad. It's terrible a never ending agony.

Eternal Reigning with God vs. Punishment

One of the greatest things about heaven is that we will reign with God forever.

  • Revelation 22:5

We don't know exactly what this reigning will entail. But, perhaps a position of responsibility. Heaven will not be boring. Adam was placed in the garden and given things to do, to dress and keep the garden. In Heaven we will be given things to do.

  • 2 Timothy 2:11-12

In Heaven there is going to be an eternity of singing praises to God, serving Him, and reigning with Him.

But, in Hell there will be everlasting punishment.

They will dwell with the Devil and not with God.

  • 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9
  • Genesis 2:15
  • 2 Timothy 2:12

He will take vengeance on those who know not God and obey not the gospel of Jesus Christ with everlasting destruction away from the presence of the Lord.

The best thing about heaven is also the worst thing about hell: it lasts forever!

"And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." - Matthew 25:4

It is not just for a lifetime or a long time, but everlasting. Hell will last just long as heaven, and that is forever. Think of the worst tragedy you can imagine and multiply that by a million times and it's still worse than that. The beauty of heaven is the horror of hell. Think about the best time, happiest time you could have and multiply it a million times greater and it's still going to be greater than that.

Heaven is being prepared for God's people. He knows how to prepare a place for His people.

  • John 14:1-3

Heaven is a prepared place for God's people. Hell is a prepared place for the Devil and his angels. Heaven is where we want to go.

You can enjoy the eternal home of Heaven. The best thing about Heaven is God. And the worst thing about Hell is that God is not there.

If you want to go to Heaven you have to believe and repent of your sins, confess your belief in Jesus Christ and be buried in baptism with Him obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ to be restored to a right relationship with him.
