In the movie Remember the Titans, the Coach inspired his team by saying, "You make sure they remember, FOREVER, the night they played the Titans!" They were to leave in their opponents minds, no doubts as to who they had played.
What’s the prevailing attitude we see in society? Are there absolutes? Do we live in a society that wants to make it’s own rules? How can we live a life where we don’t have doubt?
Conviction - A belief or opinion that is held firmly. One is willing to go to great lengths to defend it. Fever is shown in the commitment.
Peter was Convicted
- Matthew 26:35 - Peter, was convicted enough to say he would die with him.
A belief is what you hold but a CONVICTION is what holds you.
A lot of people believe there IS a God. But, how many people believe God?
To have conviction it has to start with what you Know/Knowledge.
Know/Knowledge - To have understanding of, to be aware of the truth or factuality.
- John 6:44-45
- 2 Timothy 2:2; 3:10, 13-17
We have to know the truth. This is a taught religion. This knowledge and truth is the key to have conviction of what God’ wants us to do.
- It tells us who He is.
- We see His grace,
- We see His love, by Jesus sent to the cross.
We see his …

Paul was Suffering
- 2 Timothy 1:8-12
When Paul knew the truth, he was convicted and knew what he had to do. And he did it.
But, he also had to suffer because he obeyed the truth. Paul was committed to the gospel. He suffered, because of his conviction of the knowledge which he had in Christ.
Paul was not ashamed. Paul was bold.
- 2 Timothy 2:15
- Romans 1:16
- Philippians 1:20-21
What Paul wanted was for Christ to be magnified in his body. How do we do that?
It’s daily standing up for the cause of Christ.
Paul was Faithful
- Ephesians 1:18-20
Paul was Persuaded
- Romans 8:1, 38-39
- Philippians 3:4-8
Paul is persuaded, his conviction is so strong because he knows the truth.
He talks about his history, and how he could have confidence in his physical flesh as a Jew. But, he counted those things but loss for the knowledge of Christ Jesus the Lord.
Paul was Committed
- Sermon on Mars Hill, Acts 17
- Before Felix in Acts 24
- Before King Agrippa, Acts 26
We should see the life of Paul and his confidence and understand that we too need to be committed to Christ.
Is my commitment a commitment?
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: For we are not ignorant of his devices.
- 2 Corinthians 2:11
Satan is always trying to pull us away, weaken our conviction and our knowledge. He puts people in front of us every day to try and cause us to doubt.
Is my commitment evident in the workplace or in school?
- 1 Peter 3:15
Sanctify the Lord God in your heart.
- Do we know the answers to why we believe in the things we believe?
- Why do we believe we must be baptized?
- Why do we not use instruments in worship?
- Do we have to go to worship every week?
Is my commitment evident in my family?
- Ephesians 6:1-4
"For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?" - 1 Corinthians 7;16
In our homes we have to set the example so those who aren’t Christians can come to know the truth.
Is my commitment evident to my friends?
"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." - Matthew 5:13-16
We need to let our light shine, we need to let the truth be seen in our lives.
- 1 Corinthians 15:33
"I would rather be a man of conviction than a man of conformity." -- Martin Luther King Jr.
- Hebrews 12:1-2
We need to leave a cloud of witness, like those of faith found in Hebrews, so like the movie reference, Remember the Titans, they’ll remember our conviction. We need to show that we will never let go.
If you haven't put Jesus on in baptism you are outside the ark of safety. And to be saved you need to put him on in baptism. It's not until you become a Christian that you can let the light of Christ show forth from you.
