The Spirit and His Fruit
October 27, 2019
Passage: Galatians 5:16,17
Service Type:

Those who bear the fruit of the spirit also will inherit the kingdom of God. The Christian must crucify the flesh in order to bear the battle and bear fruit. Each of us have the same conflict today. It’s personal, we all face it, the flesh lusting against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh.

  • Galatians 5:16, 17

There is is always the conflict.

Paul is writing to the churches of Galatia, in the Roman empire, or, it could also be an ethnic group. He tells them they are the sons of God.

  • Galatians 3:26,27

These are Christians who still have this conflict within them.

  • Galatians 3:28,29

"In thy seed all the nations in the earth will be blessed." The promise made to Abraham, is seen fulfilled in the Galatian church and also in all of us today.

We have the spirit when we walk according to the word of God.

  • Galatians 5:16,17

We are subject to God, so we must walk according to God’s word. Yet, the flesh lusts against the spirit. In each of us there is that constant warfare. Paul addresses this.

Paul, even in his faithfulness, admits in Romans 7:22 that he faced the same problem. Paul says he knows what is right, but there is a war within him warring between the flesh and his spirit.

  • Romans 8:1,2

But we can rest in this promise, there is NO condemnation for those in Christ who walk not after the flesh. We have that freedom, though it is still a struggle, we can overcome IN Christ Jesus.

  • Romans 8:12

We are debtors not to flesh, but to the Spirit. We are obligated to fight this battle each day.

What is the Determining Factor?

Living in the Spirit

  • Galatians 2:20

We are crucified with Christ. We put our lust of the flesh to death. It is no longer ourselves who live but Christ lives in us.

  • Colossians 2:11
  • Colossians 3:1,2

We are to seek those things which are above.

  • Matthew 6:33

We are to keep ourselves in subjection to the word of God.

  • 1 Corinthians 9:24

Paul teaches us, that he himself was still in conflict. He had to keep on top of it. The crucifixion of self is important, it is the determining factor for if we are living in the spirit or not.

Walk in the Spirit

Those who have been crucified with Christ must walk in the Spirit.

  • Colossians 3:3
  • Galatians 5:24
  • Ephesians 3:16,17

The determining factor between the flesh and the spirit, is the crucifixion of self. Those who walk in the spirit bear the fruit of the spirit.

What are the Fruit of the Spirit?

  • Galatians 5:22-23

The fruit is collective. We must bear all of them.

  • Love
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Long-suffering
  • Gentleness
  • goodness
  • faith
  • temperance
  • self-control.

The bearing of the fruit of the spirit is dependent on Christ planting the word in our hearts.
