2 Corinthians 4:8-9

We can take heart and courage that God is with us.

  • 2 Timothy 1:12
  • Isaiah 9:6-7

Isaiah prophesied around the time of the Assyrian invasion. The Assyrians were a terrifying nation. They were he scourge of the ancient world. They were the ancient masters of siege warfare. There was no city that was safe from them. They were a destroyer of every nation. No city was safe excepting the city of Jerusalem when God protected them.

They tore down every wall that was before them. The invented machines to batter through all ways. They were masters at mind games. They made bas reliefs of their conquests which were gruesome in depiction of the horror they ddi to the cities which opposed them.

To fall to this hoard of Assyrians was the most terrifying of circumstances.

The northern kingdom of Israel was about to be carried away into captivity by this horrific nation. Judah was given a temporary reprieve because Hezekiah heeded the warnings of Isaiah.

Spiritually speaking. we are that nation today. We are like that nation who were under siege, but we are under the siege of sin.

Israel and Syria stood in a unified front to go up against Assyria and they asked Judah to join them, but they refused. And, Isaiah gave a sign to Judah to stand firm that there seed would continue.

  • Isaiah 7:14, 9:1-6

Even their faithful remnant would withstand against the foe. They needed hope, as do we today.

In Isaiah 7:14, they were to be given a sign. A beacon of hope that would mark a miracle. It was a sign that was to point to something else.

The Message of a Prophecy

A prophesy had two possible messages.

  1. A sign for what would soon come to pass in the day it was given.
  2. A sign for the Messiah which would come.

This translation, Virgian the Hebrew word, Alma, can apply to a young woman, whether a virgin or not, they are of marriageable age but, can either be a young maid, a virgin, or a newly married woman.

Yet, is there anything miraculous about a young woman conceiving a child in marriage? There is not. It is a commonplace occurrence.

The Bible records two miraculous conceptions within marriage. Sarah and Elizabeth in their advanced age, yet, those occurred in the natural way, only for women past age.

So the prophecy fulfillment requires a miraculous conception. And, in Luke 2, Mary herself in the Greek refers to herself as a virgin. Thus, this should clear up any misconceptions.

Isaiah declares that the Emmanuel would come.

  • Matthew 1:8-25

The promise of the son was given.

  • John 1:1-3, 14

Jesus is God in the flesh. Jesus is the promise from God.

  • Isaiah 9:1-3

In Galilee of the nations there will be darkness but a light shall arise.

As Assyrians come through and conquer the cities it’s as if you see one by one the lights go out. But, the prophesy states that a great light would come.

The prophecy was fulfilled in the time of the conquering nation, by Judah being delivered but ultimately it’s fulfilled in the coming Messiah.

  • Matthew 4:12-16
  • Isaiah 9:5
  • Judges 7:19-21

There is going to be a day like that where the few would overcome the many. Where Judah a few would overcome the many. And, in th NT the small band of men, the disciples of Christ would conquer the world.

  • John 8:31-32

A Prophecy for A Time of Peace

  • Isaiah 9:5

The new Israel would be a spiritual kingdom and it’s citizens armored and dressed in clothes of white..

  • Ephesians 6:10-11

The Prophecy - A Savior is Coming

  • Isaiah 9:6,7

Depictions of the Son

  • Isaiah 9:6

This hearkens back to Isaiah 4:17.

The power of the Son of God, the rule or dominion, shows he will sit upon the spiritual throne of David.

His name shall be called, a name given by the parents. It could also mean a reputation, as in one who makes a name for himself. It can be one’s essence.

This is the essence of the Son of God.

The Prophecy of Wonderful

The marvel of the ages. A true miracle worker. Nicodemus declared his miracles.

  • John 3:2
  • John 20:30-31
  • John 21:25
  • Acts 2:22

The wonder of his person would startle many nations.

  • Matthew 12:41-42

The men of Nineveh, in the days of Isaiah,  are the Assyrians. Yet they repented at the teaching of Jonah.
