When Obedience is Hard

Passage: Hebrews 5:8,9
Service Type:
  • Hebrews 5:8,9
  • James 2:10

Obedience is difficult when we aren't in the mood. If we decline to do the right thing when we font feel like it, that's not true commitment.

What of God decided he no longer wants to hold the world together.

  • Colossians 1:15,16
  • 2 Timothy 4:2

We need to be resolved to be instant, urgent, in season and out of season. We have to preach the word when they like it and when we don't like it.

Sometimes, there are people who simply do not want to obey the gospel. But we have remain being instant in season and out of season.

  • Mark 12:30

In reality being in the mood to not obey God is outright disobedience.

Some Choose to Not to Obey Because it's not Convenient

  • Acts 24:25

Felix was making excuses because it wasn't convenient for him. If we delay obedience it only becomes harder.

  • Matthew 19:21,22

Often, it becomes harder to obey if you delay. And we aren't promised tomorrow. We have to be in a right relationship with God now, because there may not be another opportunity.

  • Matthew 6:32

Is it Possible for us to be so obsessed with our routine that God has to make an appointment to meet with us?

Real work for the Lord rarely happens in a convenient time.  There is much in the Lord's work can't be put on the back burner.

  1. Having a Bible study isn't always convenient.
  2. Benevolent efforts are not always convenient.
  3. Standing for the truth, obedience is not always convenient.
  4. We may not always understand the why of God's will.
  • Genesis 6:13-22

A flood… that was something new. Prior to this a mist came up and watered the earth. Noah could have asked a lot of questions.  He could have said it was not convenient.  But, Noah did all the God told him to do.

  • Genesis 12:1-4

Abraham was told to leave his family, and everything he knew behind. He left for a place he'd never seen. Yet, he did as the Lord told him to do. God said go and so he went..

  • Exodus 3:7-10

Moses eventually obeyed. God had to give him some encouragement.  He was downtrodden and had to be built up a bit.  Understanding can be put aside, but, obedience cannot.

Some say…

  • Why is adultery the only grounds for divorce?
  • Or, why cant we worship with mechanical instruments?
  • Obedience is sometimes hard when we don't understand something.
  • Why baptism?

As long as we understand what to do we should obey.

Sometimes Obedience Seems to be a Matter of Preference

  • Proverbs 14:12
  • Jeremiah 10:23

One must be able to set aside their own preferences in order to obey God.

  • Genesis 22:1-3

Do you think Abraham would want to do this thing? Offer his son? Of course not. But he obeyed God.

  • 2 Kings 5:8-14

Naaman, did not prefer to obey by being dipped in the Jordan river. But it wasn't until he obeyed that he was healed.

  • Hebrews 5:7-9

There may have been in the human side of Jesus a preference to obey in another way. But. He obeyed the Father.

Some Choose to Not Obey when it may Bring Embarrassment

  • John 12:42,43

They knew. These are the men of the Sanhedrin counsel. They approved putting him to death, yet they knew He was the son of God.

Remember Peter? He had said he would never deny Christ. Yet later he denied him 3 times.

  • Galatians 2:11-13

Peter didn't care to eat with the Gentiles until the Jewish Christian's came

Whomever disobeys out of embarrassment, Jesus will deny before the Father.

  •  Mark 9:4

We all from time to time fail the test. Because we are different.  No one wants to be different.  And at times as adults we are afraid of standing up for fear of embarrassment.

Paul, had to discipline himself.

  • 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Self discipline is vital in our pleasing God.

Jesus is the supreme example of consistent obedience. He was tempted in the same points of temptation as we are, yet He was without sin.

In truth, obedience is hard, and disobedience is easy.

  • Proverbs 13:15
  • Matthew 11:28,29

May nothing stand in the way of our obedience to the Lord.

If you believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and willing to repent of your sins, confessing the a name of Jesus and be baptized to have your sins washed away you will be acting in obedience to God's will.
