Passage: Romans 1:1-5, 16
Service Type:

This morning our topic is A Man on a Mission.

  • Romans 1:1-5, 16

Paul introduces himself.

  1. He's a serving man, a bondservant of Jesus Christ.
  2. He's an apostle, a sent man. Apostolos, a man sent with a message that didn't originate from himself.
  3. He's a separated man, separated for the gospel of Christ.

How would you introduce yourself? What's your mission, as an individual Christian? What is your mission as an individual congregation?

What is the book of Romans about?

All have sinned. This is our most accute problem, in America today and has always been. People behaving in ways that transgress the Law of God.

  • Isaiah 59:1-2

Sin is our most accute problem and Paul's mission was to introduce a message that could remedy this problem.

  • Romans 3:24

Paul says that God has made a way, to justify us from sin, just as if I've never sinned.

  • Romans 6:3-4

When I do those things, in my heart, God will justify us, and it will be just as if I never sinned.

Paul, says he was the chief of sinners, and even then, God has forgiven him of sin. Paul says that Christ Jesus came down, so that even teh chief fo sinners can be justifited. That's the man's mission. And, a summary of this great book, how God justifies us, and makes it just as if I've never sinned.

  • Romans 8:28

What justifies us is a system of faith. Not faith in what we do, but in what Christ did when He died for us on the cross. He died, sinless, on the cross, was buried in a tomb, and rose again. God has acted in a way toward you so that you can be forgiven.

Paul is about altering people. He's about altering souls. He's about clothing for the soul. He wants to alter your relationship with God in such a way that your souls have been altered.

  • Romans 12:1

We're to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The word transformed, means a metamorphosis. A change is to occur.

Paul, says that is what he's about with the Roman culture around him he didn't want to forget that he was changed, and a new man in Christ.

Our mission isn't to cloister inside a church  building and complain about the darkness. Light doesn't do any good if we hide it under a bushel.

  • Ephesians 4:15

Our mission isn't to be disappointed by the darkness. Our mission is to take the light into the darkness with our lips bring the Word of Christ to the world.

Our mission is the same mission that the Apostle Paul had, to take the gospel to the people around us.

  • Romans 1:1

Paul says he's ready to preach the gospel to the Roman Christians.

  • Galatians 2:20

Paul says he's ready, eager to preach the gospel. What are you eager to talk about?

  • Romans 1:16
  • Colossians 3:4
  • Colossians 1:27

How many people does the Bible say He warns? Every man! Paul says, to this end I also labor.

Labor, agomisomy, agony. This word referred to the greek Olympic games and the sweat, agony that athletes combatted for to win a laurel wreath. Paul says he labors for a reward that never ends.

If you are here and a child of God, someone preached, taught you a message who changed your destination. We all have the ability to be involved in altering the place where people spend eternity.

  • Philippians 2:12-13
  • Philippians 1:6
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13

There has to be a transformation in yoru heart. There has to be a working in you.

  • Romans 10:17

God, wants to light a fire of faith in your heart. Start with those who are closest to you, and He wants you to talk about what is in His Word. There are so many ways we can be involved in this mission to take the gospel to the world.

  • Romans 1:1, 9, 16, 2

The gospel of God, the gospel of his Son, the gospel of Christ. In verse 2, it says that this was promised before time, he's talking about the Old Testament. He's talking about the promises made by the prophets of the Old Testament guiding us toward the Christ, the gospel of God.

  • Isaiah 53
  • Acts 8

The gospel pre-dated the prophets. The gospel pre-dated the world.

  • 1 Peter 1:20

He's the alpha and omega. He sees the beginning of the world to the end of it. He was for-ordained.

  • Revelation 13:8

"Before God ever said, let there be light, He laready said, let there be a cross and an empty tomb." - unknown preacher.

God already knew, he forordained the cross, and the empty tomb. He already knew of the ark, and the calling of Abraham, and the Exodus from Egypt, and the Law. He already knew.

Yet, in all of that, He chooses me. He chooses me to be a part of His mission. This mission is bigger than America's mission, or the KC Chiefs, mission, it is about the salvation of souls.

  • Romans 1:3

Jesus, the Son of God, is of the seed of David. Paul says this gospel is concerning the Son. In this first chapter, he mentions Jesus several times, this gospel is about Jesus.

The message of the church of Christ needs to be about Jesus Christ.

We should talk about baptism.

  • Romans 6

It is the like shadow for the death, burial and resurrection of our lives like as Christ was raised up to walk in new life.

We need to preach about baptism, but we must first preach about Jesus. Paul preached first of Jesus Christ and the promises made and being fulfilled.

Paul says, tell them the good news!

Preach about Jesus before you start telling them what they are to do. Make them fall in love with Him, so they are willing to do what they need to do. When we preach concerning Jeuss Christ, as Paul said, we can teach the hearts of men to be converted.

When we are in love with Jesus, His gospel will be on our hearts and lips.

  • Romans 1:1-5

I am on a mission.
