Open your Bibles to 2 Corinthians 12:1-4. We read in the text about the third heaven; this implies that there are three heavens.
If you tell me that you lived on the third floor of a building, that will imply that there was a first and also a second floor. I would come to the first and the second floors before reaching the third.
What are the Three Heavens?
The First Heaven
This is called “Aerial." That first layer is known as the atmospheric heaven, the clouds, the atmosphere above us, where the birds fly. Scientists tell us that this extends from the Earth’s main sea level to the Von Karman Line about 62 miles high.
This God created this part of the atmosphere on the second day.
- Genesis 1:6-8
He called it the "open firmament of heaven."
- Genesis 1:20
Jesus alluded to it when He said, "the birds of the heaven."
- Matthew 8:20 ASV
Reference is also made to it in Revelation 20:11. He's talking about that physical realm, that arial, that is part of the atmosphere.
- Revelation 21:1
He's saying he sees this vision of Heaven, it is a physical representation of a spiritual truth. Heaven is not physical, it is a spiritual place, but he depicts it as a physical place so that we can somewhat understand.
The Second Heaven
This is called “Astral.” It's the area past the Von Karman line, where space is considered to begin. The exosphere is there, but beyond that is space, the outer space. That final frontier, referred to in the movies. It is the outerspace, the home of the stars, the sun, and the moon.
- Psalms 19:1
- Psalms 40:22
- Isaiah 40:22
As evidence that this heaven is the home of the stars.
- Matthew 24:29
Peter adds, "the heavens shall pass away with a great noise."
- 2 Peter 3:10
The second heaven, is the reference to what is beyond the atmosphere.
The Third Heaven
This is the habitation of God.
- 1 Kings 8:30
God doesn't dwell in the sky, in the clouds, He doesn't dwell in the planets or the stars that are in outerspace. He dwells in the beyond all that is physical.
- Matthew 5:34-35
Heaven is God's throne. That is where God dwells, where He reigns.
It is also the habitation of Christ.
- Hebrews 4:14
- Hebrews 9:24
Into this heaven Jesus ascended following His resurrection from the dead.
- Acts 1:11
It was here that Stephen envisioned the Lord.
- Acts 7:55-56
It is called "the heaven of heavens."
- Deuteronomy 10:14
John was given a vision of heaven.
- Revelation 21:10-27.
Conditions that will Exist in the Third Heaven
- Life - John 5:28-29
Its inhabitants are conscious and converse with each other.
- Luke 16:19-31
The state here is but a prelude to the place of the final abode of the soul.
- 1 Corinthians 15:24-26
- 2 Peter 1:11
- Joy - Matthew 25:21
- Psalms 16:11
- Rest - Revelation 14:13
Here we grow weary in this sinful world, but there we can rest from our labors.
What We Will Enjoy in Heaven
- A Reward - Matthew 5:11-12
- 1 Peter 1:4
- Citizenship – Philippians 3:20 (ASV)
Here we are merely strangers and sojourners.
- 1 Peter 2:11
The Christian's permanent home is not in this world, but in heaven.
- John 14:1-3
- A Treasure - Matthew 6:19-21
- 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Heaven is not imaginary, it is something very real.
There is no truth any more firmly established in the Bible than that heaven is the final abode of the righteous. The word "heaven" appears more than 500 times in the Bible.
God's Word guarantees a life of bliss for the righteous after this life in the heavenly home.
- John 14:1-3
- 2 Corinthians 5:1-2
- Hebrews 11:10
I want to go to that wonderful place! I want to be where Abraham, Moses, David, Paul, and the many other saints of God are. I want to sing with them for endless ages praising the wonderful love and grace of God. I want to rest after this life of trouble, strife, suffering, and sorrow when all of those things are taken away.
I want to view that majestic city, having for its light the glory of God and the Lamb.
Heaven is depicted as a wonderful place, of great beauty and rest. A place where God is.
Think, I as a mere human, have opportunity to go and be with God. What an exciting thought.
- John 14:6
We come to God, to go to Heaven because Christ died on a cross for us. He is the only one who could and did redeem us. We are redeemed because Jesus, and God, loved us enough to come to this life, to live it perfectly without sin, and to give His life as a ransom for us.
To go to be with Him, I've got to obey His commandments, 1 John 3:9. We do it because we love Him. We change our life, we recognize that sin put Him on the cross. We must repent of our sins. We must believe that He is the Son of God, and be willing to confess His name, and be baptized to have our sins washed away.
