Cities of Refuge

The cities of refuge, in the International Bible Encyclopedia. If a man were killed the nearest male representative of his family was to be the avenger of the one who was killed. These cities were instituted so the manslayer might have a place of escape until justice can be persued. 

 

UPon reaching the city his case was to be given tot he elders of the city where he must stay until he could present his ….

 

If he was found gulity of murder, he was to be executed by the avenger of blood. 

 

These cities were put into place to as a refuge for those who killed a man by mistake. 

 

Hebrews 6:18

 

In the church we have taken refuge, in the city of refuge, in the church of Christ. We are guilty of sin, but by His blood we can take refuge. 

 

The person who is in Christ has refuge from sin and condemnation. 

 

There are some similarities that we can draw between these cities of refuge and the church. 

 

Kedesh

 

Kedesh means Holy

 

The church is a holy nation. 

Holy means to be set apart, to be called out.

 

2 Corinthians 6:17

 

the word church means Ecclesia, the called out.

 

Colossians 1:13-14

 

Taken out of the world and placed in the kingdom.

The church, while in the world, is to not be of the world. 

 

Romans 12:1-2

 

Only those who aqre in Christ will be presented to HIm when he comes again

Kedesh represents holiness

Means shoulder…

 

PUt your shoulder into the effort.

It gives support to the body.

The church is the shoulder of the truth.

The pillar and ground of the truth, it supports and upholds the truth

The seven churches are compared to candlesticks… it supports the light, it holds forth the truth, the word of life. 

 

The City of Hebron,

 

Hebron means Alliance, Leauge or Confederacy

 

Conveys the idea of fellowship or partnership.

Philippians 1:3-5, they were great supporters of Paul.

 

Philippians 4:15,16, communication, or held in communion, joint participation, They were joining with Paul in his missionary work because they were sending financial support.

Acts 2:42, fellowship, association together, with the apostles, working and serving under them. 

Vs. 46, working together

 

  1. Contribution, 

2 Corinthians 8:1-4, in trials they were liberal to those who were in poverty, in the felloship of the ministry of the saints.

Strong, Fortress

The church is a strong fortress against the powers of evil. In the curch we have refuge from the fiery darts of the devil.

Matthew 16, the gates of hell, cannot overcome the church.

Height or elevation

 

The church of Christ occupies an exalted position.

There is no other institution on earth that is so elevated in God’s estimation. 

 

The church has the exalted favor of God. There is no honor as great as being an humble citizen of God.

The least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John the baptist.

The road to the citites was smooth, and plain and easy to access by all. 

The road to Christ is straight, and accessible to all nations.

Posts and signs were set up directign the way to the cities. 

 

God has also set up sign posts leading to the cityo fRefuge in CHrist Jeusu

Psalm 119:105

 

The whole Bible is a sign post to Christ. 

The Old Testament tells the Jews that He would Come

The Gospels Tell us he did come

The Acts tells us how to get into Christ

THe Epistles tell us how to remain faithful inChrist

And Refelation, tells us that those who wash their robes will come out of the great tribulation.

These citiers were set up in allaras for all men who neeede to take refuge

 

The gospel is for all, and all can come to the city of refuge

Heaven has done evreything he possibly can to give man redemption. But, if you don’t tak refuge you’ll be lost. 

 

The city of refuge is ready for all.

If you are anot in Christ where the spiritual blessings are found, you need ot take hold of Christ and take refuge by hearing, repenting confessing the name of Christ and being burind in baptism for the remision of sins, to raise and walk in a new life. The way fo safety in sonly found in the curch.
