Earth-Based but Heaven Bound

Speaker:
Series:
Passage: Philippians 3:17 - 4:1
Service Type:

We experience this world with our five senses. Most people in this world think of only this world. That’s what their minds are on. One of the greatest challenges we face is being earth-based but heaven bound. We are in the world but not of the world.

  • Philippians 3:19, there is the hear and now
  • Philippians 3:20, and the there and then

We should ask ourselves, is my mind set on heavenly things?

Setting the Mind on Heaven

A Pattern to Acknowledge

A. Example of Paul

Mark them who set the example, being imitators together of those who are doing right.

  • Philippians 3:17

NKJ, ESV, join in with them, in following the example. Paul states he is an example, as he is a follower of Christ.

  • 1 Corinthians 11:1

We must be a follower of Paul in that nothing is more important to us, than Christ and His church.

B. Example of Fellow Christians

  • 1 John 1:7
  • Philippians 3:17

If we mark those who are in fellowship with Christ, and we follow their example we too will be in the light and have fellowship with the fother.

A People to Avoid

  • Philippians 3:18-19

For every good example there are bad examples.

A. Specific Application

It's important to avoid enemies of the cross. Paul may possibly have been referring to Judaizing teachers.

  • Galatians 2:21

Righteousness comes not by the law, but by Christ.

  • Galatians 5:4

Fallen from grace… they were turning away from the pattern of Paul as he followed Christ. They were concerned for earthly things.

Paul wept for this because they were becoming enemies of the cross of Christ.

A Purpose to Achieve

  • Philippians 3:20-4:1

Stand fast in the Lord… Paul’s desire can be summed up with the words he wrote to the Christians in Rome.

  • Romans 12:2

To be transformed and not be like the world. To not be like those whose God is their belly.

  • Colossians 3:2

Paul says to set their affection, their love, on things above. Our goal, our desire is to go to heaven. Therefor Paul desires us to think on Heaven,

A. A Heavenly Place

  • Hebrews 11:13

We are not of this world. We are earth-based but Heaven bound. We need to recognize that we are only here for a little time In eternity the things we are concerned about in this life will be of NO concern.

  • 1 Peter 2:11

We are pilgrims. One who is going from one place to another. We don’t need to worry about the things we are leaving behind.

*“This world is not my home…”

B. A Heavenly Person

We should be looking for the savior our Lord Jesus Christ. He has promised that he’s coming again.

  • John 14:1-4

He promised He is coming again. So we should be looking for His return, looking for the Heavenly Person who is the way the truth and the life. We need to have our minds set on Christ.

C. Heavenly Purpose

When the Lord returns amazing things will occur.

  • Philippians 3:29

Our bodies will be changed, a spiritual body. We can’t know or understand what that is, we can know that what God will do will be not an earthly body but one like Christ's a glorious body.

Jesus will fashion our body of humiliation into a body glorious like the lord’s,

  • 1 John 3:2

We shall be like HIM. Whatever that body will be, it will be like HIM.

The point is, why center the attention on the flesh, when the flesh will change. We need to transform our mind by the renewing og our mind, and we live that life faithfully dedicated to God, we will have a renewing of the body, a new body. A heavenly purpose.

D. Heavenly Power

  • Philippians 3:21

He is able to make all things subject to himself.

  • Matthew 28:18

He is given all power.

  • Ephesians 1:22
  • Hebrews 1:3

Because he has been given all power, he has subdued all things under himself. We are to focus on His power, that he can fulfill the promise that He has given us.

E. Heavenly Precept

  • Philippians 4:1

He wants them to stand fast, in the Heavenly precepts. To stand fast in His example, and in the example of other faithful Christians.

We are to stand fast IN Christ. Not in error. IF we are to find out that we are in error we have to change. If we stay in our own wants we will miss the things that He wants us to stand fast in.

We must stand fast in the strength of the Lord, recognizing that Christ, God, is with us.

  • Ephesians 6:10

One way to stand fast int he Lord is to set our lives on things above. To decide today to not let anythign lese stand between us and Christ.

This earth will perish. It will melt with a fervent heat.

  • 2 Peter 3:10,

All physical things are destined to perish. This world is not our home we are just passing through it.

  • 2 Corinthians 4:18

We need to not look at the temporal things, but focus on the things not seen, the eternal.

We can’t experience God with our five senses. We can't Him in the same way we experience this world. But the we experience the things of the world, but they are not going to last.

  • Matthew 6:19-20

Lay up for self treasures in Heaven... where your treasure is, there is your heart.

Where should we set our minds? Not on the temporary, but rather, on the eternal, on Christ, on God, on Heaven.

We may be earth-based but as Christians we are heaven bound. Let us focus our hearts, our minds, and our lives on Jesus Christ.

The only way to truly set your minds on things above is to become His disciple, it is to become a child of God, through obedience to the word of God. You must believe in Jesus the Christ, confess Him as the Son of God, repent of your sins,  and being baptized to have those sins washed away and living a life faithful to Him.
