Passage: Colossians 3:1-3
Service Type:

"If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God." — Colossians 3:1-3

We're looking closely at affections and what we should and shouldn't focus on. The Bible teaches us that we become what we set our minds on. When we set our minds on worldly things we become a worldly person. If we set our minds on sinful things we become a sinful person. When we truly set our mind on Christ, then you truly become a Christian.

The Greek word for affections is translated as mind in the American Standard. It means, to think, to set your mind upon, applying moral interests and reflection.

Where are your interests lying? Set your interests, your focus, your heart on things above, and not on things of the earth.

  • Matthew 6:19-20, 21

Everyone has affections set on something. Christians have their minds on Heavenly things.

  • 1 Peter 4:4

In Noah's days sin was rampant. In Sodom & Gomorrah sin was rampant, and homosexuality was rampant, and the norm for many.

In our day, we place our affections on many things. Some of which aren't in and of themselves bad things. However, if they distract us from doing what we should, they can become bad things.

The Bible sets some boundaries for our affections.

We have to sacrifice self and follow Christ.

We have to Not Place Affections on Sinful Pleasures

We need to think seriously about how we use money and the purpose it has in our lives.

Do Not Set Affections on Preeminence

The love of preeminence can lead to division and destruction of congregations.

Do Not Set Affections on The Praise of Men

  • John 12:42-43
  • Matthew 6:1-2

Let us love mankind but not the praise of men.

We Should Set Our Affections on Those Who are Lost

  • Luke 19:10
  • John 3:16

Affections are powerful and may very well dictate where we will spend eternity. It's easy to let the things of the world distract us. But, God's grace is sufficient to lead us to set our affections on things above.

  • Romans 6:1-4

Before we can set our affections on Christian things we must first be risen with Christ having died to sin, in baptism, confessing Christ as the Son of God, and be willing to walk in faith with Him.
