Passage: Proverbs 8
Service Type:

We're going to look at the 8th chapter of the book of Proverbs. This book was written by Solomon, likely to his son Jeroboam. And one of the most obvious discussions is that of the relationship with a man to the opposite sex.

Solomon gives advice to his son about the flattery of the seductress woman, the woman who flatters.

Wisdom is contrasted with...

  • The woman who seduces with her beauty and flattery - Proverbs 6:24-25
  • The woman who in the open square lurks at every corner. - Proverbs 7:12

While Solomon warns his son against the embrace of an immoral woman, he encourages him to embrace a woman of a different kind, and that is wisdom, personified.

  • Proverbs 1:20-23

Wisdom is crying in the streets pleading with men to hear her.

Proverbs 8:3-4

Wisdom is calling and pleading.

1- "Wisdom comes from a Hebrew adjective that refers to the skill of a craftsman. It is synonymous with skillful, e.g., the mastery of the art of stone masonry or carpentry." - Vine's Expository Dictionary of the Bible

2- "One is wise in that their manner of life projects the fear of God and the blessing of God rests upon them. Even as the craftsman in his trade, the Old Testament chakam was learning and applying wisdom to every situation in life, and the degree in which he succeeded was a barometer of his progress on the road of wisdom." - Vine's Expository Dictionary of the Bible

3- "Wisdom is the knowledge and the ability to make the right choices at the opportune time." - Vine's Expository Dictionary of the Bible

The prerequisite of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

  • Proverbs 1:7

The Plea of Wisdom

Wisdom is the proper application of knowledge. Wisdom is personified, in Proverbs 8 as a woman.

  • To be heard - Proverbs 8:1-3
  • To be heard by all - Proverbs 8:4-5
  • To impart great great things - Proverbs 8:6-11

She wants to impart right things, pure things. She wants to impart righteousness. She wants to impart plain, simple things which are easy to understand.

The Value of Wisdom

There is no greater treasure on the earth than wisdom.

  • Proverbs 8:12-21

Wisdom cries out that which is of great value, the great value of the gospel of Christ.

  • Seen in what she possesses - Proverbs 8:12-14
  • Seen in what she gives - Proverbs 8:15-21

So many people get caught up in worldly knowledge and get lost in that instead of the sound counsel and guidance of God.

When we give our wisdom to others we counsel them.

Wisdom gives counsel through the sharing of truth and righteousness. Those that judge righteously judge with wisdom. Imagine if every member of our government led with God's wisdom.

  • Proverbs 8:17

Wisdom gives love.  And, when we seek it, it will be found.

The value of wisdom grants us those spiritual pearls, the value of which can't be measured.

The Possessions of Wisdom

Proverbs 8:22-31

Who possesses this wisdom? It was possessed by the Lord from eternity, before Creation.

  • By the Lord from Eternity - Proverbs 8:22-26

Before anything existed here on the earth, God possessed wisdom. He offers the same wisdom to us. We certainly won't know everything that He does, but the wisdom of His love and how we can go to Heaven can be ours if we would just open His word and learn from Him.

  • By the Lord in His Creation - Proverbs 8:27-32

We see that before Creation, wisdom was with God.

  • Psalm 19:1

We see the skill, the art, of all things that the Lord created and we can know that He IS and that He loves us and wants us to spend eternity with Him.

With wisdom we can see His love and know that He offers Christ for us, and we can receive HIs love if we just have ears to hear.

The Blessedness of Wisdom

  • For those willing to keep her ways - Proverbs 8:32-33
  • Those who keep her ways are blessed, spiritually happy. We can hear her instruction and be wise. The blessedness of wisdom comes to those who keep her ways.
  • For those willing to listen intently - Proverbs 8:34-36

When we listen the blessings come, when we heed and apply, great blessings come. We're to watch for and listen for it daily by being intent n our study of His words. They that find it find favor and live.

Jesus came that we can live life and live it abundantly. We can be restored to God, by applying wisdom to our lives. Those that love their own soul, and refuse to hear, love death, because all have died in their sins.

The only way to be saved is to heed the Word of God by choosing life, by heeding wisdom. Wisdom desires to share truth and righteousness.

  • Proverbs 7:27

Who are we going to listen to?

  • Proverbs 8:24

Whosoever finds wisdom finds life and obtains favor from the Lord.

The only true wisdom comes from God.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

The preaching of the cross is the power of God.

The wisdom of God is so much higher than man can know. His wisdom sent His son to the earth to die on the cross to redeem His children, to save us from our sins.

We don't deserve this, but wisdom pleads with us, and cries out for us. It is pleading through the gospel. If we transcend beyond mental acceptance and apply wisdom, we can see that faith becomes action. Faith much change our lives causing us to repent, confessing that Jesus is the Son of God, without shame, but boldly confessing Him without fear. And, be baptized to have sins washed away. this is the wisdom of God.
