Prove Yourself a Man

Speaker:
Series:
Passage: Proverbs
Service Type:

As I was preparing this sermon this week, I was thinking bout the movie, Secondhand Lions, it’s about this boy who is fighting against two older men who becomes his mentor, sort of his father. One of the older men, gives a speech to younger men.

“... people are basically good…”

The whole movie centers around that speech.

It’s a sad state in which we live, the world, and the dearth of fathers in our country. The struggles stand on the shoulder of fathers, who are not fathers. A father is one who provides for and cares for his children. David gives advice to his son Solomon before his death.

  • 1 Kings 2:3-4

Solomon was blessed to have a godly father. A man who gave him counsel in how to be a man.

  • Proverbs 4:3-9

He had a great father who gave him great advice. But, many men do not have fathers who give such advice. So where does a man go to prove himself?

One source of Fatherly Wisdom - Solomon, a great man of wisdom who through the wisdom and inspiration of God gives great fatherly advice that we can apply today.

Advice from Solomon for How to Present Yourself as a Man

Fear God and Keep His Commandments

  • Proverbs 1:7
  • Proverbs 10:27
  • Ecclesiastes 8:12
  • Ecclesiastes 12:13

Take Heed to Parents, godly parents

  • Proverbs 1:8,9
  • Proverbs 6:20-22

Benefit from the wisdom of those who are more experienced than you and who have godly advice to give you

Beware of Evil Companions

  • Proverbs 1:10-19

Listening to the advice of the ungodly will only lead you to destruction. "Evil company corrupts good manners.", 1 Corinthians 15:33.

Seek Wisdom and Understanding

  • Proverbs 2

Seek for wisdom like you would silver, or gold, or great treasure.

Wisdom is the Principal Thing

  • Proverbs 4:3

Thus, the acquisition of godly wisdom should be of the highest priority of our life.

Stand in Awe of God’s Place

Trust in God let him direct your paths.

  • Proverbs 3:5,6

Acknowledge Him as God

Fear Him, honor Him with thine own possessions.

  • Proverbs 3:7-10

Accept His chastisement in your Life

  • Proverbs 3:11-13

Let the Lord be Your Confidence

  • Proverbs 3:25-35

Take Counsel About Your Relationships

If Solomon were your father he would counsel you in your relationships with the opposite sex.  Avoid the one that would entice you.

  • Proverbs 5:1-5
  • Proverbs 6:23-35

Our relationship with the opposite sex can do a lot of damage to ourselves and our reputation.

Take Heed to Your Relationship with Your Wife

  • Proverbs 5:15-19

The Lord will know if you are looking outside your marriage.

  • Proverbs 5:20-23
  • Ecclesiastes 9:9
  • Hebrews 13:4

Prove Yourself a Man by Taking Heed to Your Character

Your character is who you are under your facade. It comes from the Greek word for sculpture. It is to bring out what is hidden in the stone, taking out bits and bits until it reveals the character which is inside.

Our character is what is inside, that perhaps no one sees.

Avoid Debt & Being Slothful

Debt enslaves:

  • Proverbs 5:1-5
  • Proverbs 17:18

Laziness, slothfulness brings poverty:

  • Proverbs 5:6-11
  • Proverbs 10:4
  • Proverbs 13:4

Christians are to be industrious, and avoid as much as possible indebtedness.

  • Romans 13:8

Learn what is an Abomination

  • Proverbs 6:16-19

Worship can be an abomination if not done in the right way.

  • Proverbs 15:5-8

We need to know right from wrong and do what is pleasing to the Father.

  • Matthew 7:23

We need to know what God’s will is, and do it.

There are many other points we can make to help us to determine whether we are a godly man or woman but these are a good place to get started.

We must take heed to fear God, keep his commandments. We must honor and listen to the advice of our parents. We must avoid evil, and seek wisdom while honoring and worshiping God in a way that pleases Him.

  • Psalm 68:5

He is a father to the fatherless. He provides counsel and guidance in his word.

  • Joshua 1:8

We have a father in heaven who has given us all things we need to know to be pleasing to Him. He gives us all things we need to be a faithful child to him can be found in His word.

The bible tells us of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. The bible tells us what we need to do to be obedient. When we hear the word of God, we must accept it, believing that God's own son died for our sins. We must choose to repent and live as He wants us to live. We must confess that Jesus is His son, and then be buried to have our sins washed away. And, having done that live a faithful life unto death that we may receive the crown of glory.
