Prove Yourself a Man
As I was preparing this sermon this week, I was thinking bout the movie, Secondhand Lions, it’s about this boy who is fighting against two older men who becomes his mentor, sort of his father. One of the older men, gives a speech to younger men.
“... people are basically good…”
The whole movie centers around that speech.
It’s a sad state in which we live, the world, and the dearth of fathers in our country. The struggles stand on the shoulder of fathers, who are not fathers. A father is one who provides for and cares for his children. David gives advice to his son Solomon before his death.
- 1 Kings 2:3-4
Solomon was blessed to have a godly father. A man who gave him counsel in how to be a man.
- Proverbs 4:3-9
He had a great father who gave him great advice. But, many men do not have fathers who give such advice. So where does a man go to prove himself?
One source of Fatherly Wisdom - Solomon, a great man of wisdom who through the wisdom and inspiration of God gives great fatherly advice that we can apply today.

There are many other points we can make to help us to determine whether we are a godly man or woman but these are a good place to get started.
We must take heed to fear God, keep his commandments. We must honor and listen to the advice of our parents. We must avoid evil, and seek wisdom while honoring and worshiping God in a way that pleases Him.
- Psalm 68:5
He is a father to the fatherless. He provides counsel and guidance in his word.

The bible tells us of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. The bible tells us what we need to do to be obedient. When we hear the word of God, we must accept it, believing that God's own son died for our sins. We must choose to repent and live as He wants us to live. We must confess that Jesus is His son, and then be buried to have our sins washed away. And, having done that live a faithful life unto death that we may receive the crown of glory.
