"I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord." ‐ Psalm 122:1
A Psalm of Degrees, these were sung by Jews who were going to Jerusalem as they went up to the temple, to the house of the Lord. They were designed to glorify the Lord and prepare the hearts of the worshipers to enter into worship.
This particular psalm talks about the place of worship, the power of worship, and the joy found in worshiping God.
The psalmist tells us that he found a reason for gladness for going int the house of the Lord. We know that not everyone shares this emotion. He found overwhelming joy in going to the house of the Lord. We too, should have that same joy.
We don’t go to Jerusalem, or the temple but when we come together to enter worship to the Lord, we should be glad.
Going to Worship Should Make Us Glad!

The Purpose for Going To the House of the Lord
To Hear God’s Precepts
One of the primary reasons to come together is to hear and heed God’s word. The Bible, the Word of God, must be the center of all that we do.
- 1 Corinthians 1:21
- Romans 10:13-17
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Bible centered preaching should thrill the heart of the child of God. When you hear the Word of the Lord it should stir your soul.
To Herald God’s Praises
We are to go there, to give thanks to the Lord. The Jews made the journey to worship with great difficulty and sacrifice.
Think of what has been done for us that we can have salvation. We can consider all the reasons we have to praise God. When we consider these reasons we may realize that we are lacking in the praising of God.
- Psalm 47:1
- Hebrews 13:15
Let us offer the sacrifice of God the fruit of our lips. We praise God in song, in our words and the way we live our lives. When we live the gospel we are preaching the gospel by example
- Psalm 113
We are glad to enter into the house of the Lord because of the purpose for going there.
Enter the House of the Lord with Gladness!
The People Who Gather There
Psalm 122 Tells us something about the people who worship with us.
A People United in Fellowship
We are to unite in fellowship and exhibit love.
- Hebrews 10:25
- 1 Corinthians 13
- Matthew 22:37-39
We are to be forgiving.
- Ephesians 4:32
We must live in toleration.
- Romans 15:1-2
We must offer restoration to those who are astray.
- Galatians 6:1-2
We can do these things with a heart of Christlike unity we can find gladness in going into the houes of the Lord. But, if we do not have the right heart, the right mentality we can never truly find joy in going into worship.
A People United by Family
The tribes of the Lord, of Israel, are a common family. Each tribe is named for a family and connected by blood. They are a family. When they went to the house of the Lord they were gathering with family.
The church is to function like a family as well. All the redeemed are united by the precious blood of Jesus. When we come together we should take the opportunity to strengthen those family bonds. It is important for a healthy family in the church.

- Acts 4:32-33
- Philippians 2:1-4

The Person They Glorify There
When the Psalmist calls on the Lord he uses the most commonly used name, YWHW, LORD.
- Deuteronomy 33:27
- Exodus 3:14
It is the name of God used to make His name known to Moses. I Am… it identifies God as the covenant keeping one. It identifies him as the God who is worthy of all our praise and worship. It is the reason we come together, without Him there is no reason to come to worship.
Coming because it’s the right time, or to see friends, or to see the preacher or because it’s what you’ve always done, it’s the wrong reason.
If you came because of God, because He saved you, you are here for the right reason. We are here in spirit with the right attitude to make Him the central focus of our lives, we are here for the right reason.
Those who come for the wrong reason will not receive anything from the worship.
Enter the House of the Lord with Gladness…
I want to be involved in his worship. He is worthy. We should all desire to enter the house of the Lord with Gladness…
Repeat these reasons.
When you consider all the reasons the psalmist declares the gladness for going to the house of the Lord, do you find agreement?
We should examine how we feel about worhsiping God and being His child.
If you are not a child of God, having not complied to His word then, we come together to proclaim His word that He died on the cross so we can be reunited with Him. The gospel tells us that we must believe tha Jesus Christ died fo our sins and rose to life on the third day. We must believe and repent from our sins, confess His Holy name and be buried in baptism to have our sins washed away and be added to the family of God.
