It's getting to be the time of year when fields of corn are ready to be harvested. When you think about harvest you think of a certain amount of haste, urgency because there is only a certain amount of time that the harvest remains good for harvest before it goes to seed.
Harvest, in the Bible always depicts a time of importance, a time of urgency.
- Matthew 9:35-38
There is a dire need in the church for evangelism. Since the first century and beyond millions each day die separated from God. The church in the United States was once the fastest growing religious body. That seems to be in decline.
There are many souls waiting to be harvested. Yet, for some reason they remain unharvested. Is it because the church believes that it's not necessary?
We must, like Christ, have compassion, and see the need in the souls who have a need for the gospel.
Compassion for the Lost
Let's look at Christ's compassion for the lost.
- Matthew 9:36
Elders, as discussed this morning, are to have the leadership of the church. But, we must also look to the example of Jesus, and He had compassion on the people.
The Jews, while worshipping God, were not worshipping according to His word, but rather to their own traditions. Thus, they were in need of a laborer to lead them to the righteous harvest. They were wandering about in a lost wilderness. Yet, there is one who was sent to them.
- Matthew 11:28
They were heavy labored, under the wait of the customs put on them by religious leaders.
We look today, and there are many wandering about lost, but following the wrong religious leader.
These people need our compassion, as sheep needing a shepherd. Jesus is here to lift that weight, the weight of sin, so that they can follow the True Shepherd.
The number who die not knowing the truth of the gospel should motivate all of us to spread the gospel.
- Matthew 9:37
Jesus, in his depiction poses a beautiful harvest. They expected the Messiah, they were prepared to receive the gospel. That's why the gospel went to the Jews first. Many were ready.
Many rejected Him, but many also followed Him and accepted Him as Messiah. There was an abundant harvest, but the laborers were few. Not many were moved with compassion as Jesus was.
We see a variety of harvest comparisons in the Bible, as it relates to the harvesting of souls for God.
- John 15:1
- Matthew 13:38
- Matthew 20:1
- 1 Corinthians 3:9
- Matthew 3:12
- Matthew 13:30
The more bountiful the harvest, the more laborers are needed. The job will never get done. There were only 12 apostles, they went into all the world. They taught them to observe all things, Matthew 28, thus they were training more disciples.
When you are talking with a friend, invite them to visit the congregation. Let them know the worship time, the location. You can use the phone, or the internet to reach out to those you know.
We can do many things to influence others.
There are many searching for answers, and if we fail to teach, they most likely will find the wrong answer.
- John 4:35
Matthew 9:38, Jesus instructs them to pray for more laborers. We all should pray for more laborers to go out and teach the gospel. The world at that time were likened to the harvest because they were ready to hear.
The same is true of the world today. Look around us, the world is in need of a Savior. Many are searching for spiritual guidance.
We have the message, and we need to show them the Light of the world. We need to show them the Christ.
We need to pray daily, to be able to labor in the field.
We can't teach if we don't study and know the Word. Thus, we must study to be ready to speak the truth, and give an answer.
- 2 Timothy 2:15
- 1 Peter 3:15
- Romans 8:32
- Philippians 4:13
- 1 Corinthians 3:6
- Romans 1:16
- Acts 2:42
- Colossians 1:23
We must roll up our sleeves and get to work with enthusiasm and zeal. The power is in the Word not in the one who teaches. We have to believe in the power of the Word to save. And, when we believe we don't have to be afraid to teach.
The gospel started with 12 men, and spread to all the world.
The Plenteous Harvest
We must not grow weary when we do what is right.
- Galatians 6:9
To win the lost, we must heed the admonition of Paul. We must remain steadfast, strong, and act as a man, and be mature in the Word.
- 1 Corinthians 15:58
- 1 Corinthians 16:13
With Christ as our banner, and the Cross as our shield we must face the battle and serve to go into the field to be a worker for the Lord.
"Thy Cross is lifed o'er us;
We journey in its light;
The crown awaits the conquest;
Lead on O God of Might!"
- E.W. Shurtleff
