Those That are Rich in This World

Passage: 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Service Type:

"Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life." - 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (KJV)

This was written during a time of deep poverty for the Christians.

  • 2 Corinthians 8:2
  • Luke 18:23

The majority of the people we read about in the Bible in the first century, most were somewhere in between very rich, and very poor. The expressions of rich and poor needs to be understood in their context.

The average income of citizens in the US might be considered very poor in Monaco, while in India those of average income in the US would be considered very rich.

When Paul speaks of those who are rich, we most likely would all fall in that category, because we all have much more than we need to survive.

Some Do’s and Don'ts for Rich People

Don’t: Be High-minded

  • 1 Timothy 6:17

The word high-minded means to be haughty or arrogant. In Luke 16, the story of the rich man and Lazarus we see that the rich man was a high-minded man. While Lazarus was poor and poor in spirit. Yet, we see that their destinies were very different.

Riches or lack thereof has nothing to do with a man’s character. Satan has convinced the multitudes that if they can just become rich, they’ll be somebody.

  • Revelation 3:17-18

We see that the Laodiceans were high-minded, or haughty because of their wealth. They said, "..., I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing;..."  But, Jesus made it clear to them that while they may have had earthly wealth they were spiritually poor.

Don’t Trust in Uncertain Riches

  • 1 Timothy 6:17

By comparison the church in Smyrna was in tribulation and poverty, but the Lord assured them that they were spiritually rich.

  • Revelation 2:9

In Timothy, Paul said to not trust in riches that are unsure. The wealth of this world is not a sure refuge.

  • Luke 12:19-20

The rich farmer, thought he had it all figured out, and that he could rest in his wealth. But, God said, NOW, your soul shall be required of thee.

We should be sure that we do not trust in uncertain riches, but rather, place our trust in the Living God.

  • Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the Lord, rather than your own paths. The things of this world are fleeting. We need to put our trust in God. Everyone regardless of economic position needs to learn to put their trust in the living God.

  • Psalm 7:1
  • Psalm 46:1

Money will never serve as a refuge or shelter.

  • Zephaniah 1:18

Put our trust in God, because money can not deliver us.

Do Remember the Source of  Your Riches

  • 1 Timothy 6:17

All things come from the LORD. He is the giver of life, breath, and all things.

  • Acts 17:25

We need to recognize that all things come from God.

Do Good with Your Riches

  • 1 Timothy 6:18

We need to do good with that which we have been given, we need to use to do good unto all men.

  • Ephesians 4:28
  • Ephesians 2:10
  • Titus 2:14

We all have opportunity to do good, and to show compassion to others.

Do Be Rich in Good Works

  • 1 Timothy 6:18

Money doesn’t do good by itself, but doing good with what we’ve been blessed with, is showing the Love of God. We ought not to do good works to feel good about ourselves. We are to do good for the love of others, to help others in their needs.

Do Be Ready to Give and Share

  • 1 Timothy 6:18

We need to see the mentality of being ready, and willing to do good works. This mindset should be in all Christians, but also within the leaders of the church who make decisions about the use of what is given within the Lord’s church.

  • Galatians 6:10

Do Store Up for Yourselves a Good Foundation

  • 1 Timothy 6:19
  • Matthew 6:19-21
  • 1 Corinthians 3:11
  • Luke 6:46
  • Matthew 7:24-27

Before we can do good works in the name of Jesus, we need to know that the foundation begins with Jesus Christ. There are many who say they do good works in the name of Jesus but fail to follow the commands of Christ.

We need to build our life upon the foundation of Christ, we need to put our trust in Jesus Christ. We need to not be like the foolish man and build upon sands. But, rather build upon a good foundation.

Do Not Lose Sight of What is Most Important

  • 1 Timothy 6:19

To lay hold on eternal salvation. Riches held to the detriment of those who hold them, that separates us from our God. When we bow down and serve the created rather than the Creator, we will not have eternal salvation. Many Christians who were once in favor of God have deceived themselves and turned o riches.

  • Mark 4:19

The deceitfulness of riches, can choke the word, and one who was a Christian can fall away by placing their trust in riches rather than their eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Those That are Rich in This World

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." - 1 Timothy 6:10

The LOVE of money has the distinction of being the cause of all kinds of evil. Having money is not sinful, but we are called upon to use what we have been given for God’s benefit, for the advancement of the kingdom of God.

Let us be grateful for the greatest riches of all, those blessing we receive through Christ Jesus, Ephesians 1:3. All spiritual blessings we can have in this life are only found in Christ. We would do well to adopt the attitude that Paul gives us here.

  • Philippians 3:7

Our attitude should be like Paul's, that we can count it all worthy if we live as Christ.

  • Live Faithfully, Revelation 2:10
  • Be Baptized, Mark 16:16
  • Confess Faith, Matthew 10:32-33
  • Repent, Luke 13:3
  • Believe, John 3:16
  • Hear, Romans 10:17

In order to receive spiritual blessings in Christ we must hear the word, believe in the son of God, repent of our sins, confess our faith in the son of God, and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins, then life a life that is faithfully following Jesus unto death.
