Thou Shalt be Missed
July 19, 2020
Passage: 1 Samuel 20:18-19
Service Type:

I want to speak about what we miss when we're not in the assembly.

  • 1 Samuel 20:18-19

In context, David at this time is on the run. He's on King Saul's bad list. Because he has received more acclaim and glory than the king because of his defeat of Goliath and the Philistines. But, he sat on the king's counsel.  The king becomes jealous of David. He's made several attempts on David's life.

He is also a close friend with the king's son, Jonathan. There comes a time when David is expected to appear at the feast of the new moon. But, David was afraid for his life. And, David asks Jonathan to go and intercede on his behalf.

Jonathan tells David that he shall be missed because his seat would be empty.

David was an integral part of the life of Saul, Jonathan, and the kingdom of Israel and his absence would be missed.

7 Reasons Why Thou Shall be Missed in the Worship Assembly

Because thy Seat Shall be Empty

The same is true in the church. When those who were once here and are gone we miss them. Sometimes, it is because they have passed on, othertimes it's because one isn't attending for various reasons. But, when the once occupied chair, or pew, is empty, they are missed.

  • Acts 20:7
  • 1 Corinthians 16:2

It was not just the custom, but the command, to meet together on the first day of the week. The examples, command the assembling to worship.

We gather to partake of the Lord's Supper, to sing together, to pray, to hear the Word and to forgive.

  • Hebrews 10:24-25

If you do not enjoy worshipping God in the presence of the saints while here on Earth, then how could you enjoy Heaven?

We show whose side we are on when we are in worship service.

  • Acts 2:42
  • John 14:15
  • James 2:18
  • 2 Peter 1:2
  • Matthew 12:30

Because Thy Tongue Shalt be Silenced

The Lord intended for the tongue to be a blessing.

  • Provers 25:11
  • Colossians 4:6
  • 2 Timothy 4:2

We shall be missed because our tongue is intended to bless and encourage.

Because Thy Ears Will be Deaf

We shall be missed because we need to be enouraged. We need each other. We need to be reminded to stay the course.

  • Galatians 6:1-2
  • Roman's 12:15

How often do we regret receiving encouraging words from our brethren? Never.

Because Thy Hands Shall be Stilled

Our hands are meant to be used in service.

  • Ecclesiastes 9:10
  • Ephesians 4:28

The Lord gave us works that we ought to be doing. We should be using our physical ability to serve the Lord.

  • Proverbs 31:13-31

We see these acts of Christian service, and we ought to be doing the same.

  • Acts 9:36-38

Think of Dorcas, and all the good that she was doing. She was missed when she died.

When you miss the assembly you have less opportunity to do these things.

Because Thy Purse will be Closed

Givign is a part of Christian life.

  • 1 Corinthians 16:2
  • Mark 12:42

When self is given, we're going to give what we have.

  • 2 Corinthians 8:5

The Macedonian Christians gave beyond what they were able. They gave themselves first to the Lord, then gave willingly out of their hearts.

When we are not here, we miss out on this opportunity.

Because of Thy Optimism

Christians should be optimistic. We have overcome the world through Christ.

  • John 16:33
  • 1 John 2:13

Through Christ Jesus we have overcome so much, we've overcome the world. We ought to have an optimistic outlook.

As Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, he was in prison. He's already gone through much trouble, to be put in jail. He finally gets there to be rejected by the Jewish people. He spends two years in prson waiting to be seen by Casear.

  • Philippians 1:12-13, 21-22; 4:13
  • Romans 8:28

God can make good come from all things, no matter how bad they are. We see here that optimism.

We should have that optimism. If Paul could have optimism under being in jail on trumped up charges. We can have optimism under quarantine.

If you aren't here we can't share in that optimism.

Because of Thy Influence

We share in influence found in the word.

  • Matthew 13:33

The gospel starts small, but is spread.

Thou Shalt be Missed

Let us so live that when we are gone, we shall be missed and our good works shall follow us.

  • Revelation 14:13

When we live in susch a way that others miss us, our influence lasts past our lives.

  • Hebrew 11:4

Let us so live our lives today, that our influence outlives us. If you are not here today, you are missed.

Are you one who is not a Christian, who has not joined that fellowship of restoration with God. To be one with God, we must be a follower of His Son, Jesus. To do that, we must believe that He is ths son, and repent of our sins, being willing to confess his name,a nd be baptized for the remission of sins. And, if you live a faithful life, walking with Christ, you shall not be missed in that Heavenly home.
