Passage: Matthew 20:20-28
Service Type:

Men Are Interested in Great Things

I want us to observe seven great things. I've chosen seven great things. Men, are often concerned about great things. Even the disciples concerned themselves over who was the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. Even the disciples were concerned about great things.

  • Matthew 18:1-4
  • Matthew 20:20-28

The disciples were misunderstanding what it truly means to be great. They were trying to decide who was the greatest, but were missing the point of servitude. Here they were trying to decide who is the greatest.

Even in the ancient world there are many lists written about the seven great things of the world. The seven great wonders of the ancient world, the colossus of roades,

  • the Colossus of Rhodes
  • the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus
  • the Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • the Great Pyramid of Giza
  • the Lighthouse of Alexandria
  • the Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  • the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

Six of the seven ancient wonders are gone.

We always list things…

Nothing by itself, nothing in all the world put together can compare to the worth of a single soul.

  • Matthew 16:26

There is nothing more valuable than the soul. The rich man assumed that his wealth was of the greatest value for his well-being. But, that very night, the Lord required his soul of him.

  • 1 Timothy 6:10

The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And, it can be a hindrance to the soul. The greatest tragedy is the loss of the soul.

  • Matthew 25:46

Even the unrighteous will have an eternal existence, but an eternal existence of eternal punishment. But, those who are righteous will have eternal life.

  • Matthew 7:21

The Greatest Injustice in the World

Sin is the greatest injustice in the world. The consequences of sin have passed down from the sin of Adam even to us today. We do not bear the sin of our fathers, but rather the consequences of sin.

  • Romans 5:12

Sin brings about the righteous indignation of God. And thus, the wages of sin is eternal death.

  • Romans 6:23

Sin is the greatest injustice.

The Greatest Power: The Gospel  Power

The gospel is the power of God to save.

The gospel is about to save our souls if we allow it to in-graft in the heart and obey it.

The Greatest Remedy : The Blood of Jesus Christ

There is no remission of sins, without blood.

  • Hebrews 9:22

Jesus Christ is the greatest sacrifice ever made.

  • Ephesians 1:7
  • Colossians 1:14
  • John 19:34

The blood is applied to penitent souls by being baptized in water to come into contact with the blood. We think of that as a symbol of the remission of sins.

  • Romans 6:3-6

It is in the watery grave of baptism that we come into contact with the power of the blood of Christ.

The Greatest Principal: Love

  • 1 Corinthians 13:13
  • John 3:16

Love is now the Christians badge of discipleship.

  • John 13:34-35

We ought to have the love of Christ for others, and they will know HIS love through Christians.

The Greatest Institution: The Church

The institution created by God. It is the greatest institution on the planet. What makes it so great? It was purchased by the greatest commodity on the planet, the blood of His only begotten son.

  • Acts 20:28

Jesus Christ is the founder and head of the church.

  • Matthew 16:18

The rock upon which he built the church is the statement of faith that Peter made. The foundation of Christ.

  • Acts 2:47

It is the greatest institution because it was bought by the blood of Christ and He is the head of the church.

The Greatest Commission

The mission of the church is the greatest commission in this world.

It has the greatest mission to go into all the world and preach the gospel. to apply the greatest remedy to those who would hear.

The Greatest Event: The Final Judgement

It will happen for every soul who ever lived.

There is nothing we can do to avoid the judgment. It will be applied to each person, and the deeds they have done in their body before God.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:10,11

We need to know the terror of the Lord before the day of judgement so we can be prepared to face him.

The judgment will compare every person to the life of Christ and what He taught.

  • John 12:48

We are going to be judged by the word of Christ. It will be permanent with no possibility of appeal.

The Greatest Pursuit: Eternal Life

The greatest pursuit is to be a Christian to pursue the eternal life that Christ has promised for those in His church.

  • John 14:1-3
  • Hebrews 11:10

Are the great things that God deems the greatest also the greatest things in your life? Have you allowed the things of this world to stand in the way of His great things? Have you laid up treasure on this earth but failed to lay up treasure in Heaven?

We lay up treasure when we commit our lives to God. When we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. We we repent of our sins, confess His name, and meet Jesus Christ in that grave of baptism, and our names are added to that great institution, the church. That's how we begin the journey. We must, like Abraham, be faithful in our journey.
