God, The Rock of Our Salvation

Speaker:
Series:
Passage: Acts 4:11-12
Service Type:

Introduction:

We live in a world that is unstable - society seems to be continually in upheaval and the world seems dark and angry much of the time

But there is reason for Hope!

"The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation." - 2 Samuel 22:47

"O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation." - Psalms 95:1

These holy men of God recognized Jehovah God, Creator of all things, as the rock of their salvation.

We would do well to learn what this means:

Our Salvation

Salvation Defined:

Thayer's Greek Dictionary: to save, to keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction.

Physically: to save a suffering one (from perishing), e.g., one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health.

Spiritually: For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost, Luke 19:10

Two uses of term:

  • Eternal, Hebrews 5:9
  • From past sins, leads to eternal salvation

Synonyms:

  • Redeemed. 1 Peter 1:18-19
  • Justified. Romans 3:24
  • Sanctified (set apart): John 17:17

Salvation Demanded

Because man has a need for salvation

The Nature of Man

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," --Romans 3:23

Not suggesting man has a sinful nature.

  • Romans 5:12
  • Not inherited, James 1:13-15

The Nature of Sin

  • 1 John 3:4 "for sin is the transgression of the law."
  • Separates us from God, Isaiah 59:1-2 "But your iniquities have separated between you and your God."
  • Rom 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death."

How Salvation is Demonstrated

  • In God's Grace: Titus 2:11, "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men"
  • In Our Faith: 1 Peter 1:9, "Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls."
  • In Our Obedience to God's Will: Matthew 7:21, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."

Our Salvation in not from any one act alone!

The Source of Salvation: God

The Source Determined

  • Though man needs salvation - not from within man: Ephesians 2:12-1

"O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." - Jeremiah 10:23

Salvation comes from God

  • God the Father

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8

  • God the Son (Jesus Christ)

"For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich." - 2 Corintians 8:9

  • The Holy Spirit

"For those who are led by the Spirit of God's are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God, and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." - Romans 8:14-17

The Source Displayed

  • 2 Peter 2:4
  • Jude 6

When man sinned, God set in motion a plan - culminated in death of His only begotten Son on a Roman cross.

"But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law. - Galatians 4:4

The Plan was an eternal

"According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Ephesians 3:11

Though man didn't deserve what God offered. Why? Because, He is a merciful God.

"But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us." - Ephesians 2:4

"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." - 2 Peter 3:9

The Substance of our Salvation: The Rock

Rock Defined: Solid, firm, strength or stability

Understand the difference between rock & sand!

Wise & Foolish man in Matthew 7:24-27

The Rock is Divine

"And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. -1 Corinthians 10:4

The Rock is our Defender

By being in God's kingdom, we have a fortress!

  • Matthew 16:18, "gates of hell shall not prevail against it."  It cannot be destroyed!
  • Standing on Rock NOTHING can harm us
  • Romans 8:28, 31, 35-39
  • John 10:29-30, "no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand."

The Rock Dismissed

"This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner." - Acts 4:11-12 (cf. 1 Pet 2:4-9).

Fact: Man is stained with sin. It is Not inherited. We are stained when we by choose to transgress God's law.

With Sin = separated from God = NO HOPE!

But we are not hopeless if choose to accept God and the plan He has provided. With HIM there is hope!

God has done His part. He has extended His grace when He gave His Son as a ransom for our sins. Man has to respond to the invitation and obey His commands.

Salvation from God is Rock Solid. It's based on promises of an eternal God who is our Rock!
