Passage: Ephesians 4:4
Service Type:

I'm going to be starring a new series on things that bind us, and today we are going to look at the things that unite us. The text is found in Ephesians 4 verses 1-6.

  • Ephesians 4:1-6

The foundation of Christian unity. Without doctrine we as Christians will have no unity. This is why Paul says we must be unified in doctrine. We must have the desire for unity. I can teach the doctrine, but I can't teach others to have a desire for unity. That is something each person must come to on their own.

We can have one body if we endeavor for one Body, in doctrine.

We must Acknowledge the Lord's Standard for Unity in the Body

This is just before Christ is to be taken up and arrested, and his prayer for the Supper. He prays for unity in the LORD.

  • John 17:20-22

In this prayer Jesus prays for true unity. You can put things together and bind them together yet they aren't together in unity. The United States is an example of this.

Unity is not just conformity. There is a standard of unity. Unity demands conformity to something.

What is the demand that God requires of us?

Jesus is the head of the church.

  • Colossians 1:18

Will we have this unity, that we place ourselves under the headship of Christ. And, that we will be one, in Him?

God wants us to be one, to be unified. We need to make sure that we do not divide the body based on human wisdom. God does not divide His body. The New Testament does not divide the body, the teachings of men is what divides.

  • 1 Corninthans 1:10-13

We are to speak the same thing, the same doctrine, the same teaching. We are to be of one mind. Is Christ divided?

There was a division at Corinth. They were becoming sectarian as they were seeking to follow men, rathr than Christ.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:18-21

Because of the so called wisdom of men, they began to forget God, and turn away from God. The members in the church thought they should do this too. This is what denominationalism is today.

These divide the body based upon the wisdom of men, rather than Christ. They do not seek to please God but rather seek to please men.

  • Galatians 1:10

Paul, admits here that at one time he sought to please men, but that if he had continued that way he could not please God.

  • Matthew 6:24

We have one master, one Lord. We can only please Him, and Him alone. If we seek to please men, we cannot serve God.

Endeavor for Unity in the Body with our Fellow Christians

This can be difficulut because we are told to do what feels good to you. But, that is not how we are to strive for unity. We are to seek to be unified with our fellow Christians.

Yet, we are bombarded with the mentality to have it your way.

Several principles can motivate us to seek to do good for others rather than self.

The principle of "Everyone can do something."

  • 1 Corinthians 12:4-27

The principle of "Esteeming others higher than self."

  • Philippians 2:1-11

The principle of loving our brethren.

  • Romans 12:9-21

We Can Have Unity in the One Body if We Will...

  • acknowledge the Lord's standard for unity of the body,
  • do not divide the body based on human wisdom,
  • endeavor for unity in the body with our fellow Christians.

To first be unified in the body of Christ you must first come to Christ in obedience to His will.

To do that, you must hear the Word of God and believe that Jesus is the Son of God, be willing to repent of your sins, confessing the name of Jesus and be baptized for the remission of your sins to rise into a new life, being one with Christ and unified with the church.
